“What? The Bible Says That? Get the Story Behind the Story!”
“Using Scripture in Catechesis”
Harvard scholar Steven Pinker, in his popular book “The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined,” includes a six-page accusation about the violence in the Hebrew Scriptures. This is a common thread evident in a current trend of atheism as well. As Catholic Catechists (religious educators), we must not only be careful with our own use of Scripture in catechesis, but also actively promote a Catholic understanding of the Bible so our students are adequately prepared for the challenges (and threat to faith) posed by this trend and by literalists / fundamentalists alike.
This presentation will give catechists some tools for helping their students (of any age) appreciate the Bible as “The Word of God… in human language.” (Vatican II)
